Zanzibar with a Toddler: A Relaxing Family Adventure (East Africa Travel Guide)

Planning your first international trip with a toddler? Zanzibar offers the perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration, making it an ideal East African destination for families. This guide shares our experience of travelling to Zanzibar with a 2 and a half year-old, offering tips and insights for a smooth and memorable adventure.

Why Zanzibar for a Family Holiday?

Our choice of Zanzibar stemmed from several factors:

Beach Bliss and Cultural Enrichment: Zanzibar provides the perfect balance of relaxing beach time and opportunities for cultural immersion. We enjoyed lazy days on the beach and exciting excursions to Stone Town.

Short Flight from South Africa: The manageable 4-hour flight from South Africa was a key consideration when travelling with our toddler. While any trip with a little one can be unpredictable, the shorter flight time seemed like a good option.

All-Inclusive Resort Options: We secured a fantastic all-inclusive package, simplifying meal times and budgeting. (More on our resort recommendations below!)

Finding the Rhythm of Island Life

Time seemed to slow down in Zanzibar, extending the feeling of our holiday. The warm, humid weather and bath-water-like ocean temperatures create a truly relaxing atmosphere. We embraced a “busy/relax” approach to our itinerary, alternating more active days (exploring Stone Town) with relaxed ones (enjoying an ocean cruise). This pace worked perfectly for our family, preventing overwhelm and maximizing enjoyment.

Zanzibar with Toddlers: Tips for a Smooth Trip

Travelling with young children requires flexibility and a go-with-the-flow attitude. While packing snacks, sunscreen, and toys are essential (you’ll find plenty of packing lists online), here are a few additional tips from our experience:

Manage Expectations: Release any rigid expectations about sleep schedules or behaviour. Embrace the unexpected and enjoy the journey.

Pack Essential Medications: Don’t forget your child’s medication for fever, colds, and any other potential ailments. Consult your doctor about a broad-based antibiotic if you feel it’s necessary.

Prepare Your Toddler: Explain the trip to your little one, describing where you’re going and what you’ll be doing. This can ease anxiety and build excitement. Older children might enjoy keeping a travel journal.

Prioritize Safety and Togetherness: Keep a close eye on your toddler, especially near the water. Focus on creating shared experiences and memories.

    Zanzibar Highlights for Families:

Swimming with Turtles: The natural aquarium offers an unforgettable opportunity to swim with these gentle creatures. (See picture above!)

Stone Town Exploration: Wander through the historic streets of Stone Town, and even spot Freddie Mercury’s childhood home.

Ocean Cruises: Relax and enjoy the stunning coastline on a leisurely ocean cruise.

Resort Relaxation: We initially stayed at Paradise Beach Resort, which offered good value. However, after experiencing Zanzibar, we highly recommend Riu Jumbo for it’s location, access to beautiful beaches and overall aesthetic.
