Avalon Springs – Montagu, South Africa

Avalon Springs is a right of passage, a place you hear about all over the country and hope someday you will be able to visit. It is a place of heritage, where families spend generations of holidays making memories to last a lifetime. This is a place to return to time after time.

A Right of Passage

We spoke to many families and couples during our stay and so many of them said that visiting Avalon Springs is a yearly occurrence for them or that they used to visit as a child and now return with their own children.

There are not many places which people add to their yearly calendar as part of how they spend their time. I appreciate how parents like to share the same fun and precious memories with their own children in this special place. This was such a strong sentiment around quality and offering guests an unbeatable experience.

We arrived on a beautiful Autumn day to this esteemed and widely known resort. Checkin was fun and quick as we were welcomed with popcorn and light drinks. Alongside us in check in were families, couples, and mature couples – I loved that people from all walks of life come here to rest, relax and rejuvenate.

Settling In (and getting straight into the pools!)

We quickly settled in and made our way to a walkabout of the resort with one of the team members. I loved getting an orientation of our environment and figuring out how we would be spending our weekend. After that, we jumped straight into the pools and were happy to be there from the word go. We spent time going on the super-tubes which was some of the best fun we have had in a long time! And quite a workout too going up and down the stairs. These moments shared as a family are some that will be cherished for years to come and this is what Avalon Springs is all about.

The hot springs are quite amazing in that all the water is pumped from the mountain making it completely natural. We got to view the pump room where we could see how far deep the water is mined. An incredible thing to see and know that the experience of these hot springs is as natural as can be. The water feels healing for the mind, body and soul.

There are big pools visible to everyone but what is really exciting is that there are little secret pools hiding away amongst some small bushes and in-between rocks and plants. It was really nice to discover these secret spots and it gives you the opportunity to keep away from the crowds if you prefer to do so.

Restaurant and Spa

We had dinners at the in-house restaurant and we ate to our hearts content! The food was hearty, wholesome and delicious and the portion sizes were well over generous. The staff were incredibly helpful and hospitable, it was a pleasant experience all round to feel cared for by the lovely people and community at Avalon Springs. The meals were of superior standard but still felt like they were prepared with the love of grandma’s recipe which for me was incredibly comforting – especially after a long day of fun in the sun and water.

One of the main highlights for us was going for a night time swim after dinner. The evenings were perfectly peaceful in the heated pool looking up at the incredible milky way stargazing was so special and something unique. We spent time ingesting this and soaking it in, taking moments of silence as nature’s gift to us – this is something that can’t be captured on camera and is something one needs to experience for themselves. Some things are sacred and are meant to be lived for that moment only.

There is an in-house spa that offers all of the treatments you need to enhance your time of rest and relaxation. Therapists are friendly and conduct their treatments with professionalism and care.

A Nod to Community

There is a deep sense of community at Avalon Springs. It feels like everyone is a family and there is a deep sense of respect for people here. I loved the simple and sincere greetings from everyone we walked past or encountered.

The hotel honours people from the local town and looks after their own.
