Rothman Manor House, Swellendam – South Africa

When you first look upon Rothman Manor Guest House you think it is a beautiful old Dutch building. It is only when you stay and spend time that you realise it is a beautiful oasis of tranquility, opulence and splendour with much to appreciate and enjoy.

Some Friendly Wildlife as Permanent House Guests

Situated in Swellendam, South Africa, Rothman Manor House is a five star boutique guesthouse. Among it’s more permanent residents is none other than Marty the Zebra and some friendly buck.  This is truly such a nice addition to the place as it aids in the ability to connect with nature and unwind. There is something about watching animals among the grass and beautiful vegetation that is just so grounding. It is also a great opportunity to ponder and reflect. I love that this simple yet unusual offering made me slow down and forget the endless to do lists that seem to occupy our minds from Monday to Friday.

Upon arrival you are immediately met with the beautiful gardens that are meticulously kept and various water features (there is a swimming pool, koi fish pond and warm Jacuzzi). One immediately feels relaxed and there seems to be a permanent smile on your face from when you first enter this grand estate. We also spent time enjoying the various birdlife

Five Star Luxury

The rooms are beautifully inviting with various amenities that elevate the experience and take you from every day life to five star luxury. Every comfort has been carefully thought of to ensure you have the very best during your stay. From heaters to aircons, snacks and bath robs, everything has been made available to make sure you can focus on relaxing, unwinding and enjoying the setting, location and space.

The Jacuzzi seems to have been the highlight for us during our stay. We initially thought we might not be able to enjoy this as much as the weather seemed a little grey but, in the end we decided to live spontaneously and jump in any way. I actually think this was rather perfect as the cool outside was perfectly complimented with the warm water. What made this extra special is that the Jacuzzi is elevated on a decking area overlooking the animals making this a very unique and special experience.

A Unique Location

Because of it’s location, Rothman Manor House is perfect for a weekend getaway if you stay in the city centre and surrounds or as a stopover for a few nights while making your way through to the sought after Garden Route. It is a great little spot to visit continually and Rothman Manor as well as Swellendam is quickly becoming a place for families, remote workers and travellers from overseas to return to on a yearly basis. Swellendam is also a great place to be based as it offers a central point to varying destinations and other smaller areas worth a visit much like Cape Agulhas (which we also explored) and Witsand to name a few.

Eat like a King in the Morning

Starting your morning with a full, hot breakfast is always the best way to start the day and that is what is on offer each morning. Rothman Manor House offers breakfast in absolute style and grace. I loved that once you enter the buffet area you can immediately make a start with a choice of cereal, pastry, fruit, yogurt, toast and varying other condiments. While we enjoyed that, our orders for hot breakfast were taken. This really set us up well for a day of exploring and relaxing

I cannot recommend Rothman Manor House enough. A truly special place unique in history and heritage with a lovely South African charm, it will exceed your expectations and keep you coming back for more.

A special mention

The Swellendam church is a real pinnacle point for the town and is a beautiful site in it’s own right. There is a weekend market which is a great way to experience some of town community.
