During our stay in Victoria Falls we had the absolute privilege of going on the Bushtracks Steam train for an unforgettable experience of magnificent views, a taste of history, delicious food and subtle entertainment. A truly unique experience that accentuates the place you are in, in a beautiful and romantic way.
The Journey Into Something Spectacular
The steam train runs on the Cape to Cairo railway line. I could not help but think of the people who had been on the very same railway line in all these years across such a vast distance and somehow felt a palatable connection. It is a very grounding experience to be able to explore in this way.
We boarded the train at the Victoria Falls train station where we were met with friendly staff and welcome drinks. As we got onto the train, there was a feeling of stepping into a different time, a time of exploration and splendour, classical but tasteful. There was an immediate sense of opportunity and as if you could be or do anything you want to. This is a powerful feeling and it is experiences like this that change you somehow.
My family and I took a seat at the front carriage which was open and enjoyed the warm summer breeze as the train began to leave the station. Enthralled by the chugging engine and passerbyers, we listened as our host told us of the history of this locomotive while taking in our fellow passengers as they too felt taken away into a different time, a different life, imagining all that was.
At Zambia-Zimbabwe Bridge Border Crossing
After making a few stops along the way to appreciate the area, we reached the Zambia-Zimbabwe border crossing where the train stopped on the bridge. Here we were able to disembark and explore the bridge. I took the opportunity to have a foot in two countries. 😉
At this stop off, we were able to take in the sweeping views of Zimbabwe and Zambia with the various gorges and waterfall areas. It was a gift to be able to spend time on the bridge taking in views only visible from this vantage point.
The Beginning of an Incredible Dinner
As we made our way back onto the train we were ushered into the dining cart. A sight of something out of a story book. The tables were beautiful with soft lighting and set out as if fit for the queen. The tables let you know that something amazing was coming.
The first course was served shortly after that and the meals kept coming very timeously for the duration of the evening catching the last rays of sunshine. We enjoyed a 5 star 5 course dinner while chugging along one of the oldest railway lines in a special town home to one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.
I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced this!
The meals were sumptuous and hearty with elegant flavors and there was a wide variety of drinks available. The night came to a close with a very talented musician singing sweet serenades at each table over dessert and/or a warm beverage to send off the evening.
The Bushtracks Steam Train Experience over Victoria Falls makes luxury look effortless and offers guests a unique and beautifully nostalgic rendezvous into another world, time and place.
